Valbuena 5º 2017 — A spring frost that reduced yields and a dry, hot summer. A short but very concentrated harvest, with powerful, fleshy wines.
A year of frost and heat: a short harvest and a concentrated, ripe Valbuena. Dense, deep-coloured ink. The nose is dark and deep —stewed black fruit, liquorice, cocoa, spices and a hint of smoke— of remarkable intensity. A full, fleshy palate with ripe tannins and a warm texture, with a lush, persistent finish. More muscle than 2016; it calls for flavourful meats. Generous already, but it will keep.
Five years from harvest: 18 months in new barrels, 18 months in used barrels and 24 months in bottle before release.
Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) 91%, Merlot 7%, Malbec 2%
Roast red meats, small game, milk-fed lamb, aged sheep's cheeses and traditional Spanish stews.
16–18 °C. Decant at least one hour before serving.
